The 14th International Conference

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES
March 7-8, 2024

On March 7-8, 2024, the University of Miami and IE University proudly hosted the 14th edition of “Reinventing Higher Education” at the University of Miami’s Newman Alumni Center. This conference brought together industry experts from around the globe to discuss the evolving roles of universities as innovation hubs and catalysts for positive societal change.

The theme, “Reinventing Higher Education: Connecting the Dots,” highlighted the importance of cross-collaborative innovation, connecting various knowledge domains to address societal issues and propel education forward. The panels explored the benefits of adapting education to our dynamic world, integrating emerging technologies like AI into every day learning, and plans to forge a new path for effective teaching and learning, using consortiums and alliances as models for a thriving educational ecosystem.

The 13th International Conference

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
March 6-7, 2023

On March 6th and 7th, 2023, IE University and the University of Cape Town (UCT) organized the 13th edition of the Reinventing Higher Education Conference. The event, hosted in Cape Town, was co-chaired by Sue Harrison, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Cape Town, and Santiago Iñiguez, President at IE University, and gathered +40 experts from all continents to address questions critical to academia, government and the private sector.

The theme for the 2023 conference was “New Humans, New Society, New Higher Education” and it focused on future-ready graduates and their vision for higher education, alternative ways to foster the cross-border mobility of students, faculty and knowledge -currently at risk given current geopolitics; south–north partnerships, decolonial methodologies and embracing an Ubuntu vision for global higher education, among other key themes impacting higher ed.

In addition to traditional panels, the 2023 conference included design thinking workshops and an un-conference format, intended to bring inclusivity and disruption to the thinking of the participants and focused on enabling all the attendees – regardless of their level of seniority – to have a voice and to feel that their voice matters.

The 12th International Conference

LUISS UNIVERSITY, ROME, ITALY
November 15-16, 2021

On November 15 and 16, 2021, IE University and Luiss University brought together more than 35 experts and distinguished guests with backgrounds in academia, media, and the private and public sectors for the 12th annual Reinventing Higher Education conference, a hybrid event taking place online and at Luiss University in Rome. This year’s theme, “Global Engagement: Towards Responsive and Innovative Universities” evaluated the role of higher education in promoting positive change and innovation across society.

Hosted by Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University (Spain) and Andrea Prencipe, Rector of Luiss University (Italy), the conference offered a great opportunity to jointly reflect on innovative educational initiatives, ranging from enquiry-based approach to problem-based teaching to digitally-enhanced teaching tools.

Some of the main topics addressed in this conversation were the dramatic changes occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on a new global landscape for Higher Education; the crucial importance of open exchange of ideas, diversity of thoughts and how universities can ensure a plurality of views and nurture open-minded and inclusive graduates; the relevance of collaborative initiatives and how higher education can mitigate external factors to enable cross border collaboration; or the need for Universities and companies to embrace the SDGs and make them the center of their research/innovation and community impact.

Virtual gathering 
“New Realities and New Visions for Higher Education”
November 17, 2020

On November 17, the presidents and rectors of several international universities from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North America came together online to take part in a virtual conference entitled Reinventing Higher Education: New Realities, New Visions for Higher Education.

Hosted by Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University (Spain) and Andrea Prencipe, Rector of Luiss University (Italy), the conference examined the different realities and changes brought about mainly as a result of the Covid-19 global pandemic, and also discussed the challenges related to new higher education models.

Some of the main topics addressed in this conversation were the challenge of new societal models and how universities are responding to this from a humanistic perspective; international mobility –prompting mixed feelings about the key value of physical interaction vs the benefits of virtual mobility-; financial models, such as the opportunities private-public initiatives present; and sustainability, an issue the panelists unanimously acknowledged as requiring universities to leave their comfort zones and become agents of change, pushing for new opportunities and growth.

On April 4 – 5, 2019, Brown University and IE University welcomed education, entrepreneurial and business leaders from around the world to the 10th edition of “Reinventing Higher Education”, a conference designed to examine issues that impact academia, government, and the private sector, as their future workforce continues to be buffeted by change.

This edition took place in the United States, on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island. The Conference engaged key stakeholders to promote a rich discussion on the future of higher education and on different ways academia, government and the private sector can work together to build the human capital of tomorrow.

The event focused on a key question: How can higher education institutions, governments, and the private sector address the needs of a changing workforce, and how can they create collaborative synergies among all three groups to create more efficient, equitable, and effective models for educational delivery?

IE University, Madrid, Spain, March 5-6, 2018

In its 9th edition, Reinventing Higher Education returned to IE University’s Madrid campus, following two previous editions held in Chile (2016) and in Mexico (2017).

On March 5-6, experts from Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the United States discussed the global impact of higher education and the challenges it faces in times of anti-globalization measures.

The symposium, organized with the support of IE Foundation and British Council, brought together university administrators, policy makers, entrepreneurs and top managers, academics, student representatives and media experts to discuss the status and future evolution of Higher Education (HE), and to debate the direction research, learning, governance and management of universities should take.

TEC de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico, December 11-12, 2017

For the second consecutive year IE University, Universidad del Desarrollo, and Tecnológico de Monterrey, came together to create a space for reflection and discussion on the future of Higher Education.

The seminar “RHE: The University of the Future” was a Latin American edition of the conference held annually by IE for the previous 7 years in Spain and on this occasion on December 11 and 12 in Monterrey City, Mexico, forming part of the 4th International Conference on Educational Innovation, “Designing the Future of Education” run by Tec de Monterrey.

The seminar focused on addressing the challenging scenario facing higher education, with a special focus on the impact of an increasingly globalized world undergoing profound technological and social change.

Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile, November 24-25, 2016

IE University, Universidad del Desarrollo and Tecnológico de Monterrey, came together to create a space for reflection and discussion on the future of Higher Education.

The seminar “RHE: The University of the Future” was a Latin American edition of the conference held annually by IE for the previous 7 years in Spain, and which took place on November 24- 25, in Santiago, Chile.

The seminar focused on addressing the challenging scenario facing higher education, with a special focus on the context of Latin America.

IE University held the sixth edition of its International Conference Reinventing Higher Education at IE’s Madrid campus on October 19 – 20, 2015. This 6th edition focused on “Shaping Global Citizens”.

The overriding aim of the conference, organized in collaboration with the British Council, was to bring together university administrators, policy makers, entrepreneurs, academics, student representatives and media experts to discuss the status and future evolution of Higher Education (HE).

IE University held the third edition of its International Conference Reinventing Higher Education at IE’s Madrid campus on October 22 – 23, 2012. This 3rd edition was focused on #Edupreneurship: New Species & Avenues to Differentiation in Higher Education. Edupreneurship was emerging as a new landscape, eliminating borders between academic institutions, community and business, and shaping new alliances which benefit the higher education sector.
